SRC Appoints New Board Members

RALEIGH, NC (January 26, 2010) Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), an independent, nonprofit organization that advances the safety, efficacy and efficiency of bariatric and metabolic surgery, today announced the appointment of four new members to its Board of Directors. The Board, comprised of bariatric surgery stakeholders, determines organizational policy and provides overall governance and oversight of SRC. The new Board members are as follows:

  • Caroline M. Apovian, MD, FACP, FACN - Dr. Apovian is Director of the Nutrition and Weight Management Center and Director of the Nutrition Support Service at Boston University Medical Center, and Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine. She is an internationally recognized nutrition and obesity clinician and clinical scientist, representing bariatric physicians on the Board. Dr. Apovian also serves as Associate Editor for Obesity as well as Obesity and Nutrition Editor for Current Opinion in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Obesity.

  • Bret Petkus - Mr. Petkus is Vice President, North America, for Bariatric Advantage, and President of The Petkus Group. He has served in principal business positions at surgical device companies, surgical practices and surgical facilities since 1997. As the founder of a freestanding outpatient facility bariatric surgery program, Mr. Petkus represents this stakeholder segment.

  • David A. Provost, MD, FACS - Dr. Provost, a surgeon at Provost Bariatrics and Chairman of SRC's Bariatric Surgery Review Committee, has practiced bariatric surgery for nearly 20 years. He serves as Medical Director of the Bariatric Center at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Dr. Provost is also Associate Editor of Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases.

  • David B. Sarwer, PhD - Dr. Sarwer is Associate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry and Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine as well as Director of Clinical Services at the Center for Weight and Eating Disorders. His research includes treatment of obesity in primary care settings as well as the psychological aspects of bariatric surgery, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Sarwer brings integrated health representation to the Board.

"Each Board member provides unique perspectives and expertise," said Dr. Neil Hutcher, Chairman of the SRC Board of Directors and a bariatric surgeon at Commonwealth Surgeons in Richmond, Virginia. "Our Board has the experience necessary to help guide SRC's growth and strengthen our ability to set the global standard for bariatric and metabolic surgical excellence."

Board members serve staggered three-year terms. The four new directors join the existing members of the Board:

  • Neil E. Hutcher, MD, FACS - Chairman, SRC Board of Directors, and Managing Director, Commonwealth Surgeons

  • Don W. Bradley, MD, MHS-CL - Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President for Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina

  • Richard Morgan Downey, JD - President, Health Care Consultancy, and Publisher and Editor, The Downey Obesity Report

  • James E. Fivecoat - Manager, Retirement Plans, Michelin North America

  • Michael K. Kerner - Chief Executive Officer, Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System

  • Walter J. Pories, MD, FACS - Chairman Emeritus, SRC Board of Directors, and Professor of Surgery, Biochemistry, Exercise and Sport Science, East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine

  • Gary M. Pratt - Chief Executive Officer, SRC

  • James W. Saxton, Esq. - Chairman, Health Care Litigation Group, and Co-Chairman, Health Law Group, Stevens & Lee
